Sparrow Dust Bath 8-7-2017

I noticed this little house sparrow working its way into a dry patch of garden dirt, kicking up fine dust to clean its plumage. Watching backyard wildlife handle everyday routines right in front of you always makes for a fun photo opportunity if you stay still enough not to spook them.

The camera captures the small songbird hunkered down low in the loose gray soil, fluffing its soft underfeathers while keeping a watchful eye on its surroundings. Crisp daylight highlights the rich reddish-brown, tan, and white patterns running along its folded wings and back. The surrounding ground texture adds natural contrast to the feathered subject.
