Limestone Quarry 10-24-2026

Several years ago, a friend and I spent an autumn afternoon scouting fall foliage across rural Connecticut when we came across this massive open limestone quarry. Standing right near the edge of the pit, the sheer drop and wide expanse immediately grabbed our attention. A standard camera lens never fully captures the true physical scale of a location like this, but seeing the deep excavation in person was quite an experience.

Bright daylight illuminated the pale, chalky limestone tiers, casting clean shadows that define the carved rock ledges and access roads winding down the slope. At the quarry floor, pooled groundwater created calm patches of turquoise and pale green, adding a sharp splash of color against the white stone. Along the top ridge, a line of autumn trees with yellow, orange, and red leaves frames the open excavation against the surrounding Connecticut woods. The resulting frame brings together raw stone, dirt haul paths, and early seasonal change.
