White Memorial 4-4-2013
White Memorial Conservation Center in Litchfield has quiet wetlands that look incredible when stripped down to basic textures. Walking the marsh boardwalk in early spring, I noticed these two weathered cattails standing tall against the open water. Converting the shot to black and white felt like the right call to strip away distractions and highlight the rugged texture of the seed heads.
The horizontal composition positions two fluffy cattails in sharp focus against a soft, shallow-depth marsh landscape. Fluffy down clings to the seed pods, creating fine, tactile detail against the muted grass below. Overhead, a layered, cloudy sky diffuses natural light evenly across the water, giving the entire frame a calm, minimalist monochrome atmosphere.
