Seaside Sanatorium 11-02-2012
Walking through the overgrown fields behind Seaside Sanatorium, finding old playground equipment rusting in the salt air is a haunting reminder of the property’s past. This tall steel slide has stood facing the main hospital building for decades, gradually rusting along its raised edges while wild beach grass swallows the surrounding yard.
Getting down low at the base of the metal chute allowed me to lead the viewer’s eye straight up the weathered steel run directly toward the central building and cupola. The warm rust along the railings contrasts against the cool brushed metal surface, while patchy autumn clouds drift across the bright blue Connecticut sky above.
