Grave Stone 10-30-2012
While exploring West Cemetery in Litchfield, Connecticut, I searched for unique relief carvings on the early American grave markers. Many of these colonial and Victorian stones feature hand-chiseled winged effigies meant to symbolize the soul’s ascension. I leaned in close with my lens to highlight the physical texture of the carved slate and the fine details preserved through centuries.
This close-up black and white photograph focuses on an intricate stone carving across a vintage gravestone. At the center is a stylized winged face with almond-shaped eyes, framed by leafy botanical flourishes and elaborate scrollwork. The weathered grain of the gray stone slab fills the entire frame, showcasing the precise chisel marks and natural surface wear.
