Thomaston Dam 5-6-2014
Standing along the crest of the Thomaston Dam in Thomaston, Connecticut, I wanted to capture the sheer sweep of the Naugatuck River basin below. A heavy ripple pattern had formed across the overcast spring sky, mirroring the curving railroad tracks that run right along the base of the earthen berm. Setting up with an ultra-wide fisheye lens let me pull both ends of the curved rail line into a single frame.
The shot looks down across the steep gravel spillway slope toward the curving tracks below, which bend sharply around a dense stand of spring pines. The small Naugatuck River cuts through the center of the valley, framed by rolling green hillsides under a vast canopy of textured gray clouds.
