Rockefeller Giant Lights 12-20-2012
Walking through Midtown Manhattan during December is an annual holiday tradition, especially taking in the massive light installations around Rockefeller Center. As night fell, these oversized vintage-style light bulb sculptures lit up along the sidewalk, drawing crowds with their bright, colorful glow. I waited for a momentary break in foot traffic to crouch down and frame the bulbs against the surrounding plaza trees.
The composition captures the giant faceted bulbs glowing in bold primary yellow, deep blue, bright red, clean white, and vivid green. Out-of-focus fairy lights strung throughout the dark cityscape form a warm bokeh background that balances the bold saturation of the illuminated plastic sculptures.
