Old Covered Bridge 11-17-2012
During a late autumn drive through the southern Berkshires, I pulled over near Sheffield, Massachusetts, to check out the Upper Sheffield Covered Bridge. The air had that crisp November chill, and the open fields surrounding the river were quickly fading into winter dormancy. Standing back along the grassy riverbank gave an authentic look at historic New England timber craftsmanship surviving through the centuries.
The composition frames the weathered gray wooden bridge spanning the quiet Housatonic River, firmly supported by rough stone abutments. Soft autumn sunlight breaks through scattered white cumulus clouds, illuminating golden shore grasses while casting gentle reflections across the still, dark water.
