Southford Falls State Park 8-4-2012
Walking past the historic paper mill site at Southford Falls State Park, this curved masonry dam immediately caught my eye. Built from rough-hewn fieldstone, the curved barrier holds back the upper pond while letting small trickles of mountain water seep between the weathered joints. It is a quiet reminder of Connecticut’s early industrial waterworks slowly giving way to nature.
The wide composition follows the sweeping curve of the rustic stone dam as it arcs across the foreground. Silky rivulets of water spill down the dark, mossy rock face into the rocky catch basin below. Calm green pond waters sit behind the stone ledge, framed by lush summer bank vegetation and fieldstone retaining walls under soft daylight.
