West Cemetery 10-28-2016
Historical cemeteries carry a tangible sense of time, especially when walking among headstones carved back in the 1800s. I explored West Cemetery under bright, high-key skies to capture the weathered textures etched into the aging marble and slate markers. Choosing black and white helped bring out every chisel mark, lichen patch, and weather crack across the stone.
The low-angle perspective establishes a commanding view of aged nineteenth-century headstones standing tall in untamed grass. Intricate engraved typography on the central marker reveals sharp, tactile detail against a bright, open horizon. In the background, tall pine trees and a brick cemetery vault sit under a stark white sky, balancing the solemn historical mood.
