Buttermilk Falls 2-3-2015
Scrambling down into the ravine at Buttermilk Falls in Terryville, Connecticut, during the bitter cold of December paid off with an impressive look at the main drop. Sub-freezing temperatures had locked the ravine in thick winter ice, leaving a fallen log encrusted in white frost right across the roaring current.
This shot frames the tallest thirty-foot drop framed by snowy granite ledges and delicate ice formations clinging to the rock face. A long exposure blurs the rushing water into soft white spray as it drains into the dark pool below, delivering a sharp tonal contrast between dark rock and pure white winter snow.
