Great Falls 3-12-2014
Hiking out to Great Falls in late winter reveals a dramatic visual battle between thick ice and rushing water as temperatures begin to climb. The falls were still heavily encased in massive hanging icicles, but the sheer volume of rushing water crashed right past the frozen ice shelves under a brilliant blue sky.
The photograph positions frozen ice columns and spraying river water in sharp focus against a clear blue winter sky pierced by an intense sun flare. Frozen droplets sparkle in mid-air against dark granite cliffs, highlighting the raw contrast between solid winter ice and roaring, untamed whitewater rapids.
