Hot Air Balloon 9-15-2012

Watching balloons drift away just as the sun dips below the horizon makes for striking minimalist photography. As the ambient daylight faded, the bright envelope colors vanished and transformed into solid dark silhouettes. I exposed for the glowing sky to turn the floating balloons and passenger basket into sharp black cutouts.

The composition features two dark balloon silhouettes floating smoothly across a dramatic gradient sky. Rich golden dusk light warms the lower clouds along the horizon, transitioning into deep evening indigo above. The intricate silhouettes of the burner rigging and passengers in the basket add compelling human detail to the clean scene.
