Southford Falls 8-16-2012
Scouting the upper spillway at Southford Falls State Park in Southbury gives you great angles on moving water without fighting heavy crowds. I set up right near the stone ledge where Eight Mile Brook gathers before dropping into the gorge. Balancing on the wet embankment with a tripod took some care, but the smooth surface reflection made it worth the stop.
A silky long exposure renders the cascading waterfall in clean white streaks as it spills over the cut stone blocks. Above the drop, the still pool acts like dark glass, mirroring the overhanging summer trees and cloudy sky. Deep olive-green water tones contrast sharply against bright foaming currents, creating a balanced, earthy woodland scene.
