Seaside Sanatorium 12-29-2014
Walking around to the rear of Seaside Sanatorium in Waterford gives you an entirely different sense of its scale and isolation. Away from the water-facing facade, the service side of the complex feels quiet and forgotten. Weeds have broken through the broad concrete courtyard, slowly reclaiming the grounds since the facility shut down in the late nineties.
I framed this shot using a wide fisheye lens low over the cracked pavement to pull the foreground right into the viewer’s face. The distorted lines accentuate the brick exterior, towering smokestack, and central spire against heavy, rolling clouds. Muted earthy brick tones and weathered concrete create a moody, historical architectural piece.
