Buttermilk Falls 1-14-2014
Buttermilk Falls in Terryville, Connecticut, is a fantastic spot to explore during midwinter when fresh snow blankets the woods. Hiking up toward the upper cascade, I spotted an old fallen log spanning across the creek alongside a classic New England stone wall, creating an ideal winter woodland scene.
The composition balances the dark rushing stream against white snow-capped boulders and a rustic stone wall running up the right bank. A slow shutter speed turns the flowing water into a smooth, silky stream as it spills into the dark foreground pool, contrasting cleanly against the bare winter tree trunks above.
