Sushi 11-30-2015
Food photography in low-lit restaurant settings is all about finding the right angle to catch ambient highlights without losing sharpness. When this fresh specialty maki roll arrived at the table, I moved in close with a wide aperture to capture the colorful toppings along the platter. The narrow focal plane emphasizes the craftsmanship that went into rolling and garnishing the dish. This shot was taken on the cruise ship Carnival Sunshine.
The macro shot frames a row of fresh sushi rolls topped with bright green masago fish roe and savory glaze. Thin white rice tightly wraps the seafood and vegetable center, while soft restaurant lighting creates a smooth, blurred backdrop behind the arranged pieces.
