Frozen Kent Falls 2-4-2014
Winter in northwest Connecticut can turn familiar waterfalls into massive natural ice sculptures. When the thermometer dipped down to eight below zero in January, I bundled up and hiked into Kent Falls State Park to see the lower cascade locked entirely in solid ice and heavy drifting snow along the gorge.
The photograph captures the frozen cascade spanning the width of the rocky gorge, draped in sculpted tiers of white snow and thick blue-tinged glacial ice. In the foreground, swirling patterns of frozen slush lock the lower pool into stillness, surrounded by snow-dusted evergreens standing stark against the cold winter sky.
