Long exposure of Campbell Falls cascading into a forest pool with a visible white foam swirl

Campbell Falls 7-1-2013

Returning to Campbell Falls in early July gave me an opportunity to focus on the unique water motion created at the base of the cascade. I walked down to the water’s edge and placed the tripod low over the rocky bank to catch both the upper falls and the quiet eddy pooling below.

A long shutter exposure reveals both tiers of the waterfall tumbling across dark, jagged boulders before draining into the dark basin. The slow exposure transforms the current in the foreground pool into an intricate white foam swirl. Deep green hemlocks and leafy foliage flank the cliffs, adding rich natural contrast.
