Mine Hill Preserve 6-19-2013
Walking up to this half-hidden mine entrance at Mine Hill Preserve revealed a flooded passage heading straight into the rocky hillside. Peering through the opening into the dark cavern, the complete stillness of the standing water acted like a dark mirror reflecting the damp stone ceiling above the waterline.
Clear, dark pool water covers the cavern floor, filled with submerged and floating orange autumn leaves from surrounding trees. Rough stone walls coated in vibrant green moss frame the tunnel opening, leading the viewer’s eye straight into the deep shadows and cool air of the abandoned iron mining drift inside the hill.
