Seaside Sanatorium 11-11-2012
Gaining a glimpse inside Seaside Sanatorium without setting foot inside requires finding the right window. Walking along the perimeter in Waterford, I found an exterior door with a missing glass pane. Resting my camera carefully against the wooden frame let me capture this stark view straight down an interior institutional hallway.
Converting the photograph to monochrome highlights the decaying layers of peeling lead paint curling off the walls like paper. The long perspective pulls you down the corridor toward an open double door, capturing ambient light that spills across the worn linoleum floor. It is a quiet, evocative study in structural abandonment and coastal humidity.
