Flea-Bitten Gray Horse in Pasture 8-22-2026
Back in June 2020, I took a trip out to a quiet farm in New York State to photograph the premises. While walking the property, I came across this calm horse enjoying the afternoon in the open pasture. When researching its distinctive coat pattern afterward, I learned that this unique look of tiny dark speckles across a light coat is formally called “flea-bitten gray.” Not being an equestrian expert, the name originally sounded derogatory to me, but it is actually the official, standard terminology used across horse registries.
This photograph captures the horse in a side profile under bright summer daylight, highlighting the subtle textures of its speckled coat against a softly blurred background of deep green trees and a rustic paddock fence. The natural sun brings out crisp detail along the mane and neck, creating a clean visual separation from the cool forest shadows behind it.
